The Leather
Vegetable tanning is a working process taking inspiration from nature and - in full harmony - to nature going back. Vegetable tanning means materials safeguarding human health, result of the combination between craftsmanship and up-to-date technology, tradition and new research, always following the principle of a continuous improvement. Vegetable-tanned leather productive cycle is strictly monitored to ensure a low impact on the environment: No animal is killed for its skin. On the contrary, the raw hides used by our tanneries are the discarded by-products of the food industry producing meat for human consumption. Being tanned with natural tannins, a vegetable-tanned manufact can be easily recycled at the end of its life, thanks to its chemical-biological characteristics. Our tanneries have made huge investments in depuration systems and waste recycling that make them work in full respect of man and the environment. Many of the substances used during the tanning process are recovered, recycled and reused in different fields. Hair removed from raw hides is transformed into agricultural fertilizer; sludge produced by the depuration plants is reused in the construction field to make bricks. Vegetable-tanned leather, recognizable from its trademark, does not contain any toxic substance such as azo-dyes, nickel, PCP or chrome VI and is highly tolerable for those who suffer from metal related allergies. At last those consumers who care about product's quality and environmental protection have a reference trademark when they buy their leather products!

This is the brand name conceived by Oliviero Toscani, who designed also the new logo.
This brand name has been chosen to particularly highlight Tuscany, a region well-known and appreciated all over the world, and the peculiarities of its land. The term ‘vegetable-tanned’ has been maintained because evocative of the local handicraft tradition and of the productive process. The imprint of a hand in our logo reminds that our leather is made by hand with the passion of a few master tanners, repositories of ancient traditions.
The Consortium is an elite group: excellence, quality, handicraft tradition and Tuscan origins are the absolute requirements to be admitted.

The Guarantee Label
WHEN
The first goal that the Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium set for itself since its very beginning was to create a quality trademark able to identify and guarantee the vegetable-tanned leather produced by its member tanneries.
The second step, in 1998, was the creation of a guarantee label, a tangible device in support of the trademark, aiming to:
* Certifying the origin of the product
* Stating respect for the environment
* Attesting the naturalness of leather
* Ensuring the high level of the tanning process in full respect of the rules UNI 10885

HOW
The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium and its associated tanneries are the exclusive owners of this trademark and they, only, can allow their customers to use it by signing a contract of licence which entitles them to attach the guarantee label Vegetable-Tanned Leather of Tuscany to their finished products.

WHAT
It is an informative tag that certificates the originality and naturalness of the vegetable-tanned leather supplied by our member tanneries. Each tag is printed with anti-counterfaiting techniques. It is also progressively numbered to be easily recognised and allow the Consortium to identify both the supplying tannery and the product manufacturer at any time and all over the world. The tags are available in multilingual version with text in Italian, English and Japanese.

WHY
It will be an added value for your products, identifying a natural leather, ensuring the end consumer about the quality of his purchase and making him more conscious of what he buys: the prime matter used to make our vegetable-tanned leather is a harmless material both for man and the environment and our productive cycle follows the most rigorous laws to ensure the safety of human labour.
